Ha sido demostrado, por otros autores, que el alga Ulva fasciata Delile posee una actividad antioxidante promisoria y en el presente trabajo evaluamos si la actividad antioxidante de muestras de esta alga puede ser influenciada por la adsorción de metales, pesados y otros por parte del alga. El embalse Rapel, es un cuerpo de agua que está siendo sometido a un fuerte impacto antropogénico, por lo que evidencia severos signos de eutrofización. Esto último debido a que el embalse se ha transformado en el cuerpo receptor de una gran diversidad de efluentes (industriales, agrícolas y domésticos), que evacuan sus descargas sin ningún tipo de tratamiento. The adsorption of heavy metals in soils affects their behavior in the environment and their bioavailability to plants. The knowledge of the adsorption mechanisms in competitive systems allows a more realistic evaluation of the metals' behavior in the soil than the single metal adsorption. Abstract Based on the need to monitor air pollution and on the importance of doing it with biological organisms, the present work had as main objective to assess air quality in urban areas through lichen transplants. Application of a bacterial extracellular polymeric substance in heavy metal adsorption in a co-contaminated aqueous system BJM

The application of a bacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in the bioremediation of heavy metals (Cd, Zn and Cu) by a microbial consortium in a hydrocarbon co-contaminated aqueous system was studied. At the low concentrations used in this work (1.00 ppm of each metal), it was not observed an inhibitory effect on the cellular growing. In the other hand, the application of the EPS lead to a lower concentration of the free heavy metals in solution, once a great part of them is adsorbed in the polymeric matrix (87.12% of Cd; 19.82% of Zn; and 37.64% of Cu), when compared to what is adsorbed or internalized by biomass (5.35% of Cd; 47.35% of Zn; and 24.93% of Cu). Assessment of heavy metals and nonessential content of some edible and soft tissues OceanDocs

The level concentrations of heavy metals (essential and nonessential) were measured in different marine biota including cephalopoda, bivalve, crustacean and fish. The results reveal that these organisms show more or less the same order of distribution for each of the metals studied. The average concentrations of heavy metals exhibited the following decreasing order: cephalopoda > bivalve > crustacean > fish. The levels of metals in all studied samples are still comparable to those in their corresponding in the Mediterranean Sea. ABSTRACTThis study aimed to evaluate the effects of the application of two types of oil drilling wastes on the development and absorption of barium (Ba) and sodium (Na) by sunflower plants. The waste materials were generated during the drilling of the 7-MGP-98D-BA oil well, located in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Bioaccumulation and chemical forms of cadmium, copper and lead in aquatic plants BABT

The cadmium(Cd), copper(Cu) and lead(Pb) accumulation, as well as their relative content of different chemical forms in Sagittaria sagittifolia L. and Potamogeton crispus L. were determined. The results showed that both the plants had the ability to accumulate large amounts of Cd, Cu and Pb, and they absorbed metals in dose-dependent manners. The roots of S. sagittifolia appeared more sensitive to Cd and Pb than the leaves of P. crispus. The potential of Cu uptake by these two plant tissues was similar. This work presents some results on the use of microbes from the genus Bacillus for uptake of cadmium, zinc, copper and lead ions. Maximum copper bioaccumulations were 5.6 mol/g biomass for B. sphaericus, 5.9 mol/g biomass for B. cereus and B. subtilis, and 6.4 mol/g biomass for Bacillus sp. In this work, mercury (Hg), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations and tissue distribution are determined in seven benthic invertebrates species (the key species) from the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal vent fields. The samples were collected from three hydrothermal vent fields - Menez Gwen, 840 m;, Lucky Strike, 1700 m and Rainbow, 2300 m - near the Azores Triple Junction. The present work is devoted to determine the level of total mercury in the different tissues of fish Mugil seheli, crab Portunus pelagicus, shrimp Metapenaeus stebbingi, and bivalves Paphia undulata and Gafrarium pectinatum collected from Lake Timsah and Bitter Lakes during spring 2003. In addition, factors affecting the accumulation of mercury in these organisms were studied. Phosphorus fertilizers are essential to obtain high productivity, however, they contain heavy metals that can contaminate the soil and threat the health of animals and humans. The present study focused the determination of Cd and Pb concentrations in different phosphorus fertilizers as well as the absorption of these heavy metals by velvet green bean grown on soil amended with such fertilizers. The experiment was set up as a completely randomized design in a factorial scheme. The effects of sublethal concentrations of cadmium (0.64 µg/L), iron (0.043 mg/L) and zinc (0.31 mg/L) and a mixture of these metals on succinate dehydrogenase (SD) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity and on structural changes in the mitochondria of epithelium cells of the digestive tract were examined in the oligochaete Limnodrillus hoffmeisteri after 96 h of exposure in artificial sediments. SD activity was significantly inhibited, particularly in treatments with Cd alone (92.57%), while AP increased its activity with Cd alone (73.23%). Biodiversity of Collembola in urban soils and their use as bioindicators for pollution PAB

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of pollutants on the abundance and diversity of Collembola in urban soils. The research was carried out in three parks (Cişmigiu, Izvor and Unirea) in downtown Bucharest, where the intense car traffic accounts for 70% of the local air pollution. One site in particular (Cişmigiu park) was highly contaminated with Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu at about ten times the background levels of Pb. Collembola were sampled in 2006 (July, September, November) using the transect method: 2,475 individuals from 34 species of Collembola were collected from 210 samples of soil and litter.
